The University of Texas at Austin fired basketball head coach Chris Beard after he was arrested in December for allegedly strangling his fiancée. He was one of UT’s highest-paid employees.
U.S. Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, one of Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s most vocal opponents, has become a top negotiator in the standoff to elect a House speaker. He’s set himself apart from “Never-Kevins” such as U.S. Rep. Lauren Boebert, R-Colo., and U.S. Rep. Matt Gaetz, R-Fla., who say McCarthy could offer nothing to change their votes. Roy has shared less and less of his reasoning with reporters lately, saying his current negotiations with party leaders are sensitive.
Lubbock-Cooper ISD’s board of trustees passed a resolution condemning racism weeks after parents filed a federal civil rights complaint against the district. Black students reported enduring racial slurs and other demeaning behavior as they walked down school hallways. Parents say the resolution is a publicity stunt that doesn’t substantively end the bullying or punish the students doing it.
