Ahead of the start of the Texas legislative session on Tuesday, Republican lawmakers have filed around three dozen bills targeting LGBTQ people, specifically taking aim at gender-affirming care for children, classroom lessons about sexuality and drag shows. Many LGBTQ Texans are worried about this new wave of bills but say they are ready to stay and fight.

Texas Republicans were key players in the intraparty fight over how GOP leaders would run the U.S. House, with Rep. Chip Roy, R-Austin, emerging as a lead dissenter to Rep. Kevin McCarthy’s bid for speaker. Ultimately, the Texas lawmakers helped to elect McCarthy to the position after four days of bitter fighting.

The House Democratic Caucus, which is returning to the Legislature with one less lawmaker in its ranks, has a new chair. State Rep. Trey Martinez Fischer was a key player in Democrats’ quorum break two years ago and says he is prepared to go to battle again this session if necessary.

The Texas Department of Public Safety has terminated a Texas Ranger who responded to the Uvalde school shooting, saying he failed to perform his duty. The ranger says he intends to appeal his firing.
