LEGISLATIVE UPDATE

During this year’s regular legislative session, Texas lawmakers made huge investments in higher education. They gave millions of dollars in funds to community colleges and created new endowments for public universities. But lawmakers also banned diversity, equity and inclusion offices and gave themselves more control over university faculty tenure.

Texas lawmakers passed legislation this session that will give owners of natural gas power plants incentives to build more capacity. They also enacted laws that would block local attempts to control greenhouse gas emissions, eliminate tax incentives for renewable energy companies and support building more fossil-fuel-fired power plants.

On Friday, Texas joined 17 other states in restricting transgender minors from accessing puberty blockers and hormone therapies when Gov. Greg Abbott signed into law Senate Bill 14. The new law is set to take effect on Sept. 1, but opposing legal groups have vowed to sue to keep that from happening.
