Gov. Greg Abbott signs new law to require silent panic alerts in all Texas classrooms

Alyssa Alhadeff and husband Ilan Alhadeff answer questions Tuesday after Gov. Greg Abbott signed a bill known as Alyssa’s law, named for daughter Alyssa Alhadeff, who was one of the 17 people killed in the 2018 high school shooting in Parkland, Fla.

Every public classroom in Texas will soon have a panic button alert system as part of a school safety push the Texas Legislature advanced in the wake of a mass shooting at Uvalde’s Robb Elementary School last year.

Gov. Greg Abbott in a closed-door meeting Tuesday signed several school safety related bills into law, including the panic alert legislation, with lawmakers and the parents of the student for whom the bill is named in attendance.

The panic alert law, called Alyssa’s law, would invest $1.7 million to incorporate new technology in classrooms that enable a teacher to press a silent button — either a physical button or one on a smartphone — that contacts school and area emergency service agencies during emergencies.
