Had a great meeting in Smithville on July 17 with Don Zimmerman talking about how to get conservatives elected. As a former city council member in Austin, he KNOWS how this works. He is a great resource for our group. Following are a few key points from the meeting:

How to swing votes
Guide to winning local elections
There is a small part to winning elections by swinging a small percentage of the votes which is…all about you

Ancestry and locale matters
Other things being equal, tenure and family history leverages influence

Reputation matters
Other things being equal, your public accomplishment in terms of political activism and business success, and the public attacks you’ve weathered

Public activism
Whatever you are most passionate about should be focus of activism – “lawfare” is effective against lawless bureaucrats in Marxist Metros
The most threatening leaders are most attacked by the extreme left (you only draw flak when over the target)

Family matters
Other things being equal, your success in managing family helps builds your circle of influence as does business success

You need people skills – if you don’t have them, marry them, or recruit your spouse or closest friends to make up your own.

Profession matters
People who make the best elected officials are frequently the worst candidates
Sales professionals are usually naturals at “Politics” – unfortunately after easily making friends with you to get elected, after election they easily exchange you for new friends with your establishment enemies.
How do you handle a turn coat politician who you helped get elected to visible office?

Hard work matters! (But what kind?)
Being a visible, effective campaign worker on one winning electoral campaign brings you more influence than 1,000 letters and e-mails and phone calls.
Uber & Lyft Controversy at City of Austin Council – over 28,000 e-mails and phone calls ignored

Develop and Amplify your political voice in your circle of influence and seek like-minded collaborators (Clubs help!)
Always work towards a clear conscience, never to serve political players
Your effort is more effective locally than across town or across state lines
Where possible, publicly go on offense against the political adversary – NEVER be afraid of public criticism and slander
Issue campaigns bring you public credibility; candidate campaigns bring you influence with winning candidate
