McDade ISD Schoolboard Meeting – 8-16-22

*Regular Board Meeting called to order @ 6:00 pm

*Public Comment- I was the only one that spoke. I asked a question concerning a special session/training which took place regarding SEL. I asked if SEL was the same as CRT. Superintendent Stidham said that they are not the same.
She said that SEL is in the budget. That it is post-covid. She said that SEL is required to be used and accounted for in the budget by the state.

7j- (Presented out of order) Fran Hunter with Bastrop County Care Program, an organization run by 100% volunteers, spoke about this program which distributes posters with character traits. She said that the other 3 schools in the district participate in this program. A motion was made and seconded to accept this program at McDade 5-0. Teacher Bowser said this is part of SEL.
7a- Approve the proposed tax rate. 5-0
7b- Adopt 2022-2023 school budget. 5-0
7c- Adopt Code of Conduct. Changes made- can wear tank tops. No hats or hoods on head during academic hours. Hair can be any color. Clothing should cover “rectangle” mid thigh to shoulder. Vote to approve 5-0
7d- Adopt Employee Handbook. Teachers can not wear a hat during workday. Approved 5-0
7e- Campus Update from Principals. Sanders said that high school students received a B rating and 75% registered as “College Ready.’ The President asked her what she needed help with as an estimated 157 students are coming in this year. Principal Sanders said “We need Teachers.”
Superintendent Stidham said that 3rd and 4th graders have been greatly affected by Covid because they were not in school during foundational years, and that they need to “Keep a close eye on, and pay attention to that.” She recommended having helpers in the classroom to help with kids who are not able to comprehend.
7f- Facilities and Transportation Report. Mr Johnson reported that they will continue fencing around the school. The 2 portables have been delivered. Pay went up $2 for bus drivers.
7g- TASB policy update. Superintendent Stidham said that they do not adopt the policies, but they are given to them. Teachers do have to become certified and don’t have to do it again for 5 years.
7h- Budget Amendments. There will be a meeting at the end of the month regarding the updated new budget. No date given.
7i- Board Meeting with Students, Staff, and administration. Students and Staff will meet periodically.The Superintendent said that she will do a schedule. Tentative schedule is 3 times a year. Oct 3, Feb 6, and May 30.
7j- BC Character Trait Development program presented out of order at beginning of meeting.
7k- Fall Semester Student Transfer Report. 48 Transfers will be returning.
7l- Discuss and Consider Bond Propositions. Land Acquisitions $2 million proposed by Board Member Miller. Passed 5-0. $23 Million bond proposed for Improvements of facilities and transportation. Passed 5-0.
7m- 4-H Agreement and Extracurricular Requests- Voted to Support. 5-0
7n- Board Member Karen Glosson announces resignation. Voted to Accept 4-0 with Glosson abstaining.
7o&p- The President said that they have 180 days to fill her position. President Dube suggested that they fill her position by appointment. Board Member Manas said something which was not audible to me. The President said he would not discuss this matter further in “Public Setting.” Mr Dube suggested that they discuss potential board members, and then hold a special session to vote. The President said that they should “not take applications, but talk to nominees.”

*The board moved to Executive Closed Session at 21:12 pm.
