The new legal team for an Afghan soldier who is in custody at a Texas detention center is hoping for fresh cooperation with the U.S. government as his physical and mental health deteriorate. Abdul Wasi Safi, known as Wasi, worked as an intelligence officer in the Afghan National Security Forces alongside U.S. troops. Rather than reuniting with his brother, a naturalized American citizen, Wasi was arrested at the Texas-Mexico border and has been in custody since Sept. 30.

The Public Utility Commission, which regulates the state’s electricity market, needs more state funding to ensure the state’s power grid doesn’t fail as it did during the deadly 2021 winter storm, the Texas Sunset Advisory Commission said Wednesday. The Sunset Commission regularly reviews state agencies and recommends improvements or abolishment to the state Legislature.

Although experts have backtracked on the science of “shaken baby syndrome,” used in part to win Robert Roberson’s conviction, the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals will not overturn his death sentence for the killing of his 2-year-old daughter.

House Speaker Dade Phelan has dismissed a losing Republican candidate’s election complaint after the candidate, Mike May, failed to pay a fee. May, who ran to represent House District 135 in the Houston area, claimed the results of the election were not the “true outcome” because of paper ballot shortages in Houston on Election Day.
