Why are municipal elections important?
All the quality-of-life issues that most people complain about are discussed and handled at the local level. Whereas national officials such as the president can affect policy on a large scale, the daily impacts can often be minimal on an individual basis. Local officials are those who oversee city and county budgets and resolve local problems a resident would experience more often.
Because voter turnout is usually lower in city council and school board elections, your vote will count more than in state and national elections. For example, 52.4% of registered voters in Bastrop County voted in the Nov. 8, 2022, General Election. However, only 12.7% of registered voters voted in the May 1, 2021, municipal elections.
Bastrop County Local Elections
We are just a few weeks from the May 6 election, and Bastrop County voters have a plethora of candidates running for city council and school board positions. Also on the ballot are special bond elections for Bastrop ISD, Lexington ISD, McDade ISD, and the Wildwood Municipal Utility District. They could have major impacts on our school districts.
The last day to register to vote is April 6, and early voting runs from April 24 through May 2. Election day is May 6. Voters can find a list of all candidates as well as sample ballots at the following link.
